Instructor

Dan Roy CPDT-KA, CTC

If you’ve ever met a dog named Fly, Dash, or Rocket, chances are, they’ve met Dan.
Dan Roy, CTC, is a graduate of the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers. He earned his Certificate in Training and Counseling, with honors, under the tutelage of renowned trainer, Jean Donaldson. Ms. Donaldson said of Dan:
For me, you epitomize the trainer of the future. You’re smart, mechanically able, spongy, but questioning, and have the teaching chops that – oh! Would we have killed for a generation ago.”
As a professional member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), Dan promotes dog-friendly training. He stays on top of the latest developments in science-based training and client coaching by regularly attending positive reinforcement courses and seminars.
Actively training and competing since 1997, Dan and his dogs, Nala, Rifle, and Bug have earned some of the highest titles in Dog Agility. Out thinking an Australian Shepherd is no easy task. It requires boundless energy and an unwavering, upbeat attitude – qualities that come naturally to Dan. In fact, his closest friends suspect that he’s so good at his job because deep down, he’s a herder too. Dan stays on top of his game through membership in:
  • AKC – American Kennel Club
  • USDAA – United States Dog Agility Association
  • ASCA – Australian Shepherd Club of America
  • CPE – Canine Performance Events
  • NADAC – North American Dog Agility Conference
  • ACSD – Agility Club of San Diego
Dog owners are often faced with the task of locating a new trainer as their needs change. Dan has a broad training background and the experience to match. From puppies to adults, behavior problems to canine good citizens, and competitive obedience to agility, Performance Dog Training offers the benefits of one-stop training.

Dan’s training philosophy

Dan uses positive reinforcement training methods to teach dogs to listen and respond to owner commands. Rather than wait for a dog to do something wrong, Dan encourages, recognizes, and rewards a dog for doing something right. By using a dog’s favorite things in life to reward good behavior – play ball, throw a Frisbee, offer a treat, go for a walk – his client’s dogs stay interested and invested in the training process. In short, they learn more and they learn faster.

Dan encourages clients to:
  • Take training one step at a time. Progress steadily toward a pre-determined goal.
  • Reward your dog when he gets it right.
  • Make your dog a believer. If he does what you want, he gets what he wants.
  • Use science-based learning theory to advance training progress.
  • Introduce agility challenges to promote confidence and good teamwork.
  • Keep your spirit light. It will be reflected in your dog.

What can you expect when you work with Dan?

You will accomplish much more. Your dog will develop a love for training and will look forward to working, learning, and spending time with you.
